Close Yet Far

My wife's parents live six time zones away in China, and so they have followed most of our daughter's development over videoconferencing. We use MSN Messenger, simple and convenient. And a web cam costs only a few tens of Euros.

Now the ladies of my family have been in China for a week and a half, and I'm the one watching them on-screen. It's actually a mixed blessing. Wonderful to see and hear them, but painful to be reminded so clearly of how lovely they are, yet how distant. Luckily, it's only going to be a few more days before me & junior join them over there.

There are loads of videoconferencing apps for Linux. Not knowing who to vidcall today because audio is fine is like not knowing who to audiocall back when the phone was introduced, because letter writing was fine. (-;

Actually, I'm not all that fond of audio calls either. I much prefer IM or email.

I agree. With e-mail, you can make your query or send your message to someone and then go on to other things. Phoning is such a hassle, having to catch them when they're available and keeping lists of people you haven't yet managed to reach.

Also, some people just won't shut up on the phone! Blah blah blah...

Your daughter is soooo cute! I love the curly hair. She reminds me of my neice, who at 4 years old now STILL hates to have her hair combed and would much rather let her dark curls run wild.

Thank goodness for webcams. Its hard to think how people managed to stay in touch even just 100 years ago with email, telephones, computers and priority couriers...

Yeah, Signe is a beauty. People in China just can't take their eyes off her. To them she looks really Western. Her hair responds to humidity like a hygrometer, getting all Afro sometimes. And she's a tough kid with a temperament. (-;
